Umar Akmal has claimed that he helped Babar Azam improve his game against spin, revealing that the former Pakistan captain once approached him for advice on the issue.

Babar has faced increasing scrutiny over his performance against spinners, with a significant drop in his strike rate and average in recent years. Many former cricketers have pointed to his limited shot selection against slow bowlers as a growing concern.

In an interview with a private TV channel, Akmal recalled a moment when Babar sought his input.

“I distinctly remember when he was having difficulties with spinners, getting out around midwicket. He came to me and said, ‘Umar bhai, I’m having a bit of trouble,’” Akmal shared.

Akmal claims he suggested adjustments to Babar’s grip and focus while facing spinners.

“I asked him about his grip on the bat and suggested that when facing a spinner, he should adjust his grip and keep his eyes on the ball until it’s halfway to him. From there, he could choose to cut it or play a shot that wouldn’t go flat,” he explained.

Babar was once among the most dominant batters against spin, averaging 82.1 through the end of 2021. However, his numbers have declined significantly since, dropping to around 48.

His strike rate against spin fell from 77.7 in 2023 to 68.4 the following year, and further to 60.3 in 2025. He has been dismissed by spinners 20 times in his last 39 innings.

While Babar continues to work on his game, Akmal believes he has the potential to regain his form.

Akmal also looked visibily upset when asked about his current relationship with Babar Azam, stating “Everyone has their own life.”
