Environmental tribunal halts stone-crushing | The Express Tribune

ABBOTTABAD:

In a landmark decision, the Environmental Protection Tribunal Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has ordered an immediate stop to the operations of several stone-crushing plants in Thandiani, Abbottabad, due to environmental concerns and non-compliance with regulations.

The tribunal, chaired by Malik Haroon Iqbal, heard arguments from the complainant, Barrister Hashim Iqbal Jadoon, and the accused respondents, including the owners of the crushing plants.

The complainant alleged that the plants were operating illegally, causing environmental pollution, and damaging the natural beauty of the area.

The tribunal found that the accused respondents had not obtained the necessary approvals from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Mining Department, and the Industries Department.

The EPA had issued notices to the respondents, but they had failed to comply.

The tribunal ordered the respondents to immediately stop the operations of the crushing plants until further orders. It also directed the EPA to implement the orders and provide protection to the EPA staff and the complainant during the implementation process.

Additionally, the tribunal restrained the EPA from issuing any environmental approvals to other crushing plants in the area until further orders.

The case has been adjourned to April 24, 2025, for further proceedings. This decision is a significant step towards protecting the environment and natural resources of K-P. It highlights the importance of compliance with environmental regulations and the need for responsible and sustainable practices in industries such as mining and crushing.
