LAHORE:

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the province’s first electric bus service, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly and sustainable public transportation.

The pilot phase includes 27 electric buses operating in Lahore, with plans to expand the service across Punjab. To further enhance public transport facilities, the government announced the import of 500 additional electric buses by August.

During the inauguration ceremony, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the initiative’s commitment to providing an affordable, safe, and environmentally friendly mode of transport.

She announced free travel for students, senior citizens, and people with special needs, while other passengers will be charged a subsidized fare of Rs20 to ensure accessibility. “These electric buses are a major step towards achieving a cleaner, greener Punjab,” the Chief Minister stated.

“With zero emissions and minimal environmental impact, they will significantly reduce air pollution, which remains a serious concern for Lahore and other major cities in the province.”

The new fleet is equipped with modern amenities, including free Wi-Fi, mobile charging ports and security cameras to enhance passenger safety, particularly for women. Special ramps have been installed to accommodate wheelchair users, making the service more inclusive. Maryam Nawaz emphasised that the project is part of a broader government strategy to improve urban mobility and environmental sustainability.

By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, she said, Punjab can mitigate the severe effects of smog, which has led to school closures and increased respiratory illnesses.

The chief minister also shared insights from her recent visit to China, where she studied strategies for combating air pollution.

She stressed the need for emissions monitoring and stricter environmental regulations in Punjab.

“Tracking industrial emissions and issuing fitness certificates to factories are crucial in reducing pollution,” she said.

“We are implementing similar measures here, and I appreciate the efforts of our Environment Minister in this regard.” As part of the initiative, the government has established a state-of-the-art solar-powered charging depot, equipped with an advanced command-and-control system.
