Italy-backed dairy farming project to launch in three Punjab districts | The Express Tribune

Punjab is set to launch a modern dairy farming system modelled on Italy’s advanced practices, with a pilot project starting in three districts under a partnership with Italian investors.

In the first phase, a trial project involving 1,000 buffaloes will be introduced in Pakpattan, Muzaffargarh, and Jhang, officials said after a meeting between an Italian dairy investment delegation and Punjab’s senior ministers.

The initiative, directed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aims to enhance milk and cheese production, improve packaging and export standards, and introduce modern dairy machinery, including advanced cooling and preservation systems.

A comprehensive dairy policy is also in the works.

Senior Minister Punjab Maryam Aurangzeb highlighted that the initiative would accelerate Punjab’s agricultural transformation, benefiting small farmers and women in flood-affected regions.

The province has already provided 15,000 livestock cards and subsidies worth Rs80 billion to support farmers.

Livestock Minister Aashiq Hussain briefed the Italian delegation on Punjab’s dairy development plans, while the visiting investors expressed their interest in long-term collaboration.

Italy is among the world’s leading nations in dairy and agricultural production, offering valuable expertise to Pakistan’s expanding dairy sector.

Last week, the Green Pakistan Initiative was officially launched in Cholistan with the aim of transforming agriculture and offering comprehensive support to farmers.

The launch ceremony was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Federal Ministers Rana Tanveer Hussain and Musadik Malik.

Key components of the initiative include the opening of a Green Mall and Service Company, a Smart Agri Farm, and an Agricultural Research and Facility Centre.

The Green Agri Mall and Service Company will provide farmers with access to high-quality seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides at discounted rates, delivered directly to their doorsteps.

Additionally, the initiative will offer affordable rental options for agricultural machinery, including drones.
