Juventus vs Atalanta 0-4: Bianconeri suffer worst home defeat in 57 years | The Express Tribune

Atalanta delivered a statement performance at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday, dismantling Juventus 4-0 to stay in the Serie A title race with leaders Inter and Napoli.

The dominant display marked a historic milestone for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side, as they secured their first-ever away victory against Juventus by a margin of two or more goals in Serie A history.

The visitors took the lead in the 26th minute when Mateo Retegui confidently converted a penalty after Weston McKennie handled the ball inside the box.

Atalanta wasted no time in the second half, doubling their advantage just 50 seconds after the restart. Ademola Lookman’s shot forced a save, but Marten de Roon was on hand to fire home the rebound.

A moment of brilliance sealed the match when Sead Kolašinac’s clever backheel found Davide Zappacosta in the box, and the wing-back finished clinically to put the result beyond doubt.

Lookman then added the finishing touch in the 77th minute, his deflected shot sneaking past Michele Di Gregorio to complete the rout.

The victory lifts Atalanta to within three points of league leaders Inter, keeping their faint Scudetto hopes alive. Meanwhile, Juventus remain fourth but now trail Atalanta by six points, with their title ambitions fading after another setback.

Atalanta’s resurgence has been built on a blend of defensive solidity and attacking efficiency. Their expected goals (xG) tally of 3.75 highlighted their dominance, with Retegui and Lookman contributing 2.36 of that total.

Retegui’s prowess away from home is particularly noteworthy—14 of his 22 Serie A goals have come on the road, making him one of the most lethal travelling strikers in the league’s history.

Furthermore, this was the first time Atalanta had scored at least four goals against Juventus in a single Serie A match. Their defensive record is equally impressive, having now kept five consecutive clean sheets in the league—matching similar runs from 1996-97, 1985, and 1967.

For Juventus, this is a new low in their already tumultous season under new manager Thiago Motta. A dejected Motta aftert the game spoke about his team’s position.

“At least you (the media) won’t talk about us being in the Scudetto race anymore,” said the Juventus manager.

This is Juventus’ joint-fifth worst defeat at home. The last time they lost 0-4 at home was against Torino back in 1967.

With their sights set on a top-three finish—and perhaps an outside shot at the title—Atalanta’s emphatic win sends a strong message to the rest of Serie A.
