Lahore Safari Zoo hatches ostrich chicks in first successful incubation | The Express Tribune

Listen to article

The Lahore Safari Zoo has announced the successful hatching of ten ostrich chicks through artificial incubation.

Zoo officials said this is the first time ostrich eggs have been incubated and hatched at the facility, a process that required strict environmental controls and low humidity.

A specialised setup was developed to regulate temperature and other key variables essential to ostrich embryo development.

Veterinary staff and zookeepers are monitoring the chicks around the clock. Early care includes housing the newborns on rubber mats to avoid injury, along with constant environmental support to promote healthy growth.

The chicks are reported to be in good health and are thriving under close observation.

Officials have called the development a major milestone in Pakistan’s conservation efforts. Although ostrich farming gained popularity in Punjab’s private sector several years ago, most farms have since shut down due to financial and operational challenges.

The zoo’s success offers a renewed model for scientifically managed breeding, and officials hope it will rekindle broader interest in sustainable wildlife conservation.

To engage the public, the Lahore Safari Zoo is allowing visitors to view the chicks. Officials believe the initiative will help raise awareness about species preservation and responsible captive breeding.
