Napoli win Serie A title: Antonio Conte makes history, plus Scott McTominay, Romelu Lukaku | The Express Tribune

Napoli secured their fourth Serie A title on Friday after a 2-0 victory over Cagliari at a packed Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, edging out Inter Milan to win the Italian championship. This marks Napoli’s second league crown in three seasons.

Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku scored the decisive goals in a thrilling final day clash. Napoli finished the season just one point ahead of Inter, who also won 2-0 away at Como.

However, Inter’s win was not enough to prevent Napoli’s celebrations, as their goalkeeper Pepe Reina was sent off just before half-time in his final match.

McTominay opened the scoring three minutes before half-time with his 12th goal of his debut Serie A season. His acrobatic volley from Matteo Politano’s cross broke the deadlock, symbolising Napoli’s resurgence under coach Antonio Conte.

McTominay had joined Napoli in August and quickly became a key figure in a team recovering from a poor title defence in 2023.

Lukaku sealed the victory five minutes after the break, skillfully holding off defender Yerry Mina before scoring from a long pass by Amir Rrahmani.

Meanwhile, Inter’s Joaquin Correa doubled their lead in Como, but it was not enough to overturn Napoli’s advantage.

Inter now shift focus to the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain in Munich, with coach Simone Inzaghi aiming to secure the club’s biggest prize after missing out on the Serie A title.

The decision to field a second-string side against Como suggested Inzaghi was already preparing for the upcoming final.

A series of dropped points throughout the season contributed to Inter’s failure to defend their title, leaving the Champions League as their sole opportunity for silverware this campaign.

Napoli’s triumph, meanwhile, marks a new era of success for the club and their passionate supporters.

Antonio Conte, in winning Napoli’s title, also became the first manager in history to win the Serie A title with three different clubs. Previously, he’d won it with Juventus (3 times) and Inter Milan.
