Dubai: The United Arab Emirates has launched a new humanitarian initiative in the Republic of Chad to support Sudanese refugees, distributing 3,000 food baskets across the camps of Degue, Alacha, and Abou Gadam. A mobile medical team was also deployed to provide healthcare services at the Abou Gadam camp.
The initiative was carried out in coordination with Chad’s Ministry of Social Action, Solidarity and Humanitarian Affairs, and the National Committee for the Reception and Reintegration of Refugees and Returnees. The project is part of ongoing joint efforts to alleviate the suffering of refugees and meet their essential needs.
A total of 15,000 Sudanese refugees benefited from this relief effort across the three camps. At Degue camp, 1,500 food baskets were distributed, reaching 7,500 individuals. In Alacha camp, 1,300 baskets supported 6,500 people, while 200 baskets were delivered to Abou Gadam camp, aiding 1,000 refugees.
The food supplies are intended to meet the nutritional needs of these families for an entire month, thereby enhancing food security and improving living conditions.
As part of the initiative, the mobile medical team at Abou Gadam camp delivered essential healthcare services, addressing a critical aspect of humanitarian relief in the face of challenging living conditions.
UAE’s humanitarian commitment
Rashid Saeed Al Shamsi, UAE Ambassador to Chad, said: “This initiative reflects the UAE’s enduring humanitarian and development approach, which places human welfare at its core. It reaffirms the nation’s steadfast commitment to assisting those affected by crises and conflicts, particularly in areas experiencing mass displacement and severe humanitarian conditions.”
He added: “This project highlights the UAE’s ongoing efforts to support social and economic stability for local populations in Chad. Such initiatives play a vital role in fostering social cohesion and humanitarian solidarity by providing essential resources that ensure dignified living conditions. They also contribute to addressing refugee issues globally and improving humanitarian and living standards, whether through direct assistance or in collaboration with international organisations.”
Long-term support for refugees
It is worth noting that the UAE has established three hospitals for Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries: two field hospitals in Am-Djarass and Abéché in Chad, and one in Malualkon, South Sudan. These facilities are part of the UAE’s broader mission to provide critical medical services to displaced populations.
